Book Blogger Hop Catchup

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer from Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the meme on February 15, 2013. Check out the hop here!

Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book-related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to their own blogs.
And, a bit like the Weekly Wednesday yesterday, I’m going to play catch up on some of the questions that I’ve missed over the last couple of weeks

Do you use social media to keep up with your favourite authors? I do. I’m a little wary after the whole JK Rowling debacle but I do enjoy little slices of life moments – I love seeing where they write, little behind-the-scenes moments as well as the nitty-gritty book promo stuff. Also seeing things like what they enjoy reading is really interesting. It’s like… they already feel like part of my life because I love their books, so having just that little, curated, window into their life almost makes it feel reciprocal. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not thinking we’re now BFFs and there’s a whole fascinating social psychology and sociology behind ‘celebs’ etc but yeah.

Do you prefer to read in a quiet or noisy setting? Honestly, I can read pretty much anywhere. My absolute preference is curled up listening to my music but I can – and have – read anywhere from a library to a coffee shop, on a train, or at a rock concert (during the support).  I tend to completely zone out when I’m reading and generally don’t hear anything going on around me – including people talking to me, so the noise levels around me generally don’t bother me (ok – from an anxiety and autism perspective noise bothers me, but for not a reading setting, if that makes sense?)

What was your favourite genre to read as a child? Do you still read that genre, or do you read something else now? As a child I loved a bunch of Enid Blyton’s series: The Famous Five, The Five Find-Outers, and the Adventure Series – so mystery and adventure basically. Into my tweens and I fell hard for the Hardy Boys, so more mystery and adventure. And then in my teens, I discovered horror and sci-fi. And I definitely do still read (and love) mystery, adventure, horror and sci-fi though as I’m writing this, I’m realising it’s not as much as I would like to. I might have to poke my TBR and see what falls out in those genres.

Do you enjoy reading romance novels? If so, which romance trope is your favourite? I do love me a good romance, although generally a rom-com/chick-lit type, not a Mills & Boon. They’re generally comfy and safe, and you know what’s going to happen and I can just enjoy the ride and see how it gets there.
My favourite romance tropes? Fuck, where to start? OK, I absolutely love a fake relationship, and secret relationships/forbidden love give me the fuzzies. Forced proximity makes me weak at the knees – and so does ‘everyone else can see it’. I love a good Aliens Made Them Do It or a Sex Pollen, but those are generally more in fanfiction. And who doesn’t love a good meet-cute? Oh, and soul mates. And, again mostly found in fanfiction, but a damn good BDSM-verse turns me into a puddle of llama-goo.
It would probably be easier to say I do NOT like love triangles… Hi, my name’s Cassie and I’m a sucker for a romance trope LMFAO

What is the significance of your blog header? As a queer person, I’m legally obliged to have at least one rainbow everywhere I look. And a rainbow bookshelf just felt like the perfect fit – at least to start with. It’s a little generic and feels less like it fits. I have ideas for a more ‘bibliollama’ vibe, but I have absolutely no ability to create graphics of any type so I’m saving up to hire someone through Fiverr or somewhere similar.

Have you joined the library reading app, Libby? I have, and I absolutely love it. I enjoy exploring the curated collections, seeing what’s new and popular, and finding things I’d probably never read otherwise. I use it very much the same way I use the physical library. I’ve got the app on my phone and my tablet, and I’ve got 9 books checked out right now.

Do you listen to audiobooks with earbuds or headphones? I don’t listen to audiobooks, I tune them out – it’s just someone talking at me and my mind wanders. I’ve even tried listening to Michael Shanks narrating Stargate audiobooks and it just… doesn’t work.
The earbuds vs headphones thing though, I’m a headphones kind of llama. I don’t like things in my ears and I’ve got some new noise-cancelling headphones that are bloody fantastic.

Do you post every day on your blog and/or social media?  I aim for 3-4 times a week but I haven’t been doing very well lately. Like I said yesterday, I’ve been very overwhelmed with everything and struggling to keep treading water. But I want to get back to blogging again, actually plan that time into my day to sit and write, and figure out exactly what I’m using my bibliollama Twitter and Instagram for – any suggestions on that front welcomed.

My first book of 2023

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer from Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the meme on February 15, 2013. Check out the hop here!

Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.

The Question of the week is: What was the first book you read this year? and while I haven’t finished either of them just yet, this week I have mostly been reading

I’m about 70% of the way through Midsummer Dreams at Mill Grange and absolutely loving it. It’s a nice, easy to-read, pretty feel-good book.

Thea Thomas needs to get away from her old life… and the interfering ex who won’t leave her alone. When she lands a job heading up the restoration of Mill Grange, a stunning Victorian manor in Devon, it feels like the perfect opportunity to start afresh.

What Thea didn’t anticipate was how hostile the volunteer team, led by the formidable Mable Hastings, would be about accepting new leadership. And with the deadline looming before the grand opening, Thea is in desperate need of more volunteers.

A broadcast appeal on the local news attracts the interest of arrogant but undeniably attractive celebrity historian Shaun Cowlson, who wants to make a TV programme about the restoration. It’s hard enough adding one more big personality to the mix – but then her ex turns up as one of the volunteers! What seemed like a dream come true is fast becoming a total disaster! Can Thea find a way to save the manor?

I’m liking the characters and while I do love the relationship stuff, I would actually like to be seeing more the restoration of Mill Grange as well, but then, as you know, I’m a history nerd. I’ve already bought the second book in the series and will definitely be checking out more books by Jenny Kane.

I’m 35% of the way through The Atlas Six, still enjoying it but finding it a bit more heavy going.

The Alexandrian Society is a secret society of magical academicians, the best in the world. Their members are caretakers of lost knowledge from the greatest civilizations of antiquity. And those who earn a place among their number will secure a life of wealth, power, and prestige beyond their wildest dreams. Each decade, the world’s six most uniquely talented magicians are selected for initiation – and here are the chosen few…

– Libby Rhodes and Nicolás Ferrer de Varona: inseparable enemies, cosmologists who can control matter with their minds.
– Reina Mori: a naturalist who can speak the language of life itself.
– Parisa Kamali: a mind reader whose powers of seduction are unmatched.
– Tristan Caine: the son of a crime kingpin who can see the secrets of the universe.
– Callum Nova: an insanely rich pretty boy who could bring about the end of the world. He need only ask.

When the candidates are recruited by the mysterious Atlas Blakely, they are told they must spend one year together to qualify for initiation. During this time, they will be permitted access to the Society’s archives and judged on their contributions to arcane areas of knowledge. Five, they are told, will be initiated. One will be eliminated. If they can prove themselves to be the best, they will survive. Most of them

I’m fairly sure I’m the last person to actually get around to reading this but it’s feeling like it’s been worth the wait – I’m already intrigued enough and unless something goes terribly wrong in the next 200 or so pages, will definitely be getting the next one. The main issue I have is keeping the characters and their powers straight, but that’s generally a me thing and not a mark against Olivie Blake’s writing (I can watch an entire season of a TV show and still struggle with people’s names)

Rereading Before Reading a Sequel

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer from Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the meme on February 15, 2013. Check out the hop here!

Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book-related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to their own blogs.

The Question of the week is: Do you go back and reread the previous book before starting the sequel?

The answer is ‘sometimes’. I’ve done it before and I do generally enjoy doing it but whether I do or not depends on a number of factors:
How much of the previous book/s do I remember? Can I find a decent summary of the book online?
How long has it been since I read the series? How many books are there in the series?
Is it a direct continuation of the same story? Is it another story with the same characters? A different set of characters in the same fictional location?
How much do I currently have on my plate reading-wise?
Do I want to re-read the books?

For instance – I’ve got both Percy Jackson & The Last Olympian and NK Jemisin’s The Obelisk Gate on my TBR
I can remember what happened in the Percy Jackson series pretty well so I don’t feel the need to back and re-read anything or look up any of the previous plot points
The Fifth Season, however, I’m a little more fuzzy on the details and will probably have to at least look up a decent summary – then, depending on how well that jogs my memory, I’ll decide whether or not I have to re-read it.

Favourite Protagonist Characteristics

The Question of the week is: What are your favorite characteristics of a main character?

I’ve been mulling this over for a couple of days now and I don’t know if I have any when it comes to book characters. I definitely do when it comes to tv/movie characters though – I am a sucker for the socially-awkward geek. Pretty much any show, you can guarantee they will be my favourite character and I’ll probably end up with a fictional crush on them. We’re talking everyone from Fox Mulder, Hermione Granger, Penelope Garcia, Sam Carter, Daniel Jackson and my biggest most long-standing crush, Willow Rosenberg (seriously, I burst into tears meeting Alyson Hannigan – Willow was the first time I ever saw me in a character and it was amazing)

And my Li? Yeah, she is 100% a socially-awkward geek. But then again, so am I so it all works out 😀

Book Blogger Hop: Finding New Books

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer from Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the meme on February 15, 2013. Check out the hop here!

Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.

The Question of the week is: Is it difficult to find new books in local bookstores?

The small town I live in doesn’t have a bookstore.
The Tesco Express on the retail park has a book section but I’ve only just started being able to go there again, and it’s literally in and out to get my groceries as quickly as possible – not quite up to just browsing yet.
There’s a Waterstones, a WH Smith, and a The Works in the mall in the next town over but to be honest, I avoided malls like the plague even before… well… the plague.

I tend to buy a lot of books secondhand. There are a LOT of charity shops in town, and they’ve all got book sections in. There used to be an incredible second-hand bookshop in the market – it was filled to the brim with bookshelves chock-a-block, and piles and piles and piles of books EVERYWHERE. You could ask him if he had a certain book, and if he had it, he would know exactly where to find it

So yes, I buy a lot of books second-hand. I use my library and the libby app a lot. And for any actually new books I want, I order them from Amazon because it’s really my only source for them. I do miss a good mooch around a bookstore though.

Book Blogger Hop: Reading Genres

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer from Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the meme on February 15, 2013.

Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.

The Question of the week is: Have you ever switched reading genres? If so, why?
I am not the sort of llama who reads just one or two genres. I’m very much a mood reader and will read basically anything. I definitely go through spells where I’m only in the mood to read chick lit, or only sci-fi is grabbing my attention, or I’m really enjoying Bill Bryson’s voice, but other than high fantasy? Anything goes.

When I look at the list of books I’m currently reading:
Ancient Greece: A Very Short Introduction – history, non-fiction
A Court Of Mist and Fury – fantasy, romance
The Cruel Prince – fantasy, romance, young adult
Fangirl – romance, young adult
Foundation – history, non-fiction
How To Be A Healthy & Happy Submissive – bdsm, non-fiction, sexuality
Interview With The Vampire – fantasy, horror
A Mindfulness Guide For The Frazzled – mental health, non-fiction, psychology
Music: A Very Short Introduction – art, history, non-fiction, music
Philosphy – non-fiction, philosophy,
Pompeii – history, non-fiction
The Song Of Achilles – history, lgbtqia+, romance
Symbiont – horror, sci-fi
Shakespeare – biography, history, non-fiction
Summer At Skylark Farm – chick-lit, romance
Thanatou – magic, urban fantasy,
Troublesome Words – language, non-ficion,

OK, so I noticed a couple of things there
1) I really need to get back to finishing things raher than starting them. I don’t have much on this weekend so might work on some of that
2) I’m reading a lot of non-fiction right now.

Now, if you’d asked teenage me the same question? They only read horror (specifically Stephen King) and science-fiction (generally Star Trek: TNG novels). I only really started branching out in my mid 20s, and now I’m in my 40s will read pretty much anything. This year, as I’ve mentioned previously, I’ve been purposefully trying completely new to me things, young adult fae-based fantasy especially, but authors like Sarah J Maas, Holly Black, Mira Grant, Marissa Meyer and it’s mostly been a roaring success.

I basically love a good story and the genre is becoming less important to me. I’m always looking forward to what else I’m going to discover, there’s so many exciting books out there

Book Blogger Hop: Book Tours

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer from Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the meme on February 15, 2013.

Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.

The Question of the week is: Have you ever participated in a book tour?
I have not, and before a couple of days ago, I didn’t even know what one was. I’d seen them around, seen other bloggers posts with the phrase in the title but didn’t really pay much attention or know what it was.

But then, on Friday, my friend Jaimie Admans posted the cover reveal for her newest book The Beekeeper at Elderflower Grove
Having moved into her mum’s spare room after a disastrous break-up, Kayleigh Harwood is desperate for a fresh start. When she sees an opening for a new beekeeper at the old manor house at Elderflower Grove she jumps at the chance – despite not knowing a thing about bees…

The abandoned house holds a mystery of its own – the previous owner vanished years ago – and locals have been inventing stories about the manor ever since. Unable to resist the urge to look around, Kayleigh is shocked to find drop-dead-gorgeous gardener Carey living inside!

Carey explains that the house and surrounding land is at risk of being demolished, endangering the bees, and he has been staying there to protect it.

Convinced the secret of the house holds the key to saving Elderflower Grove’s bees, Kayleigh is prepared to do everything she can to help. But is she ready to find her own happy-ever-after too…?
It’s out on July 15th and the link to pre-order is https://amzn.to/3MODJRw

Bringing it back to the topic of book tours, there was a tweet announcing one and, as it’s Jai, I was interested but didn’t know what it was. So I asked the question, Elaine @ Splashes Into Books kindly explained “You’ll be given an e-copy of the book and a date on which to share your review. Near the time of your agreed date you’ll be given access to materials to help you create your post – you can sort them to suit your blog, add your review and schedule it to post on your date. Done!”… and now I’m quite tempted to take part!

Unique talents, reading burnout and What I’m Reading Friday

I had an assignment due yesterday – an 800 word proforma outlining the argument, sites and sources I think I’m using for my end of module assessment. Do you know how cool it was to be able to talk about why I want to use Euripides and the Labours Of Heracles in an essay? But that got submitted on time, I have no more study scheduled until the weekend (reading some Pausanias) so it’s time to catch up on some link-ups

Weekly Wednesday Blogging Challenge asks A unique talent you have and this actually reminds me of a TikTok video I saw the other day which asked about our mundane superpowers. I couldn’t think of one at the time and then could I find it again, or even remember who it was by? No, no of course I couldn’t! LOL
My betrothed, Li, says that I have a talent for pressing pause on a TV/movie at the right moment to get really good expressions on characters’ faces. And, I’m really good at predicting who’s going to get sent home each week on competition shows like Bake Off or Masterchef – but never when I think about it, I can just say it moments before the presenters!

Book Blogger Hop asks (and, OK, this is last week’s question) Do you ever get burnt out from reading?  And yes, I definitely do. I used to read 70 or so books a year, but the last couple of years, since lockdown essentially, because I’ve been really struggling with my mental health, I’ve barely been reading 15-20. I’ve picked it up again this year and have alread read more than I did last year, in just three months
And in March, I was so busy with both school and work, battling my health and fatigue and wasn’t able to juggle everything so reading was the thing that got dropped. I only finished 2 books. But again, I’m coming back out of the other side of it, and I’m reading again.

What I’m Reading WednesdayFriday
What are you currently reading?Liv Albert – Greek Mythology, Bill Bryson – The Body, and Sarah J. Maas – A Court Of Mist and Fury
What did you recently finish reading?
Dr Amanda Brown – The Prison Doctor, and Sarah J. Maas – A Court Of Thorns and Roses. And I DNFed Charlaine Harris – Real Murders
What do you think you’ll read next? either Rainbow Rowell – Fangirl or Ruby Wax – A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled

Genres

I have come across two different blogging prompts/link ups this week that are asking the opposite questions to each other, so I thought I’d combine them into one post.

First up, Weekly Wednesday Blogging Challenge! is asking Favourite Book Genre and why and while I’m not sure I can articulate the why, I can definitely enthuse.

I do love me some horror. Nothing particularly gorey but something that can make me scared (in a safe way) and keep turning the pages. I discovered Stephen King when I was in my early teens – I actually remember the librarian ringing my mum to ask if I was allowed to check one of his books out. He still remains one of my favourite writers, especially his older stuff – Firestarter, ‘Salem’s Lot, Misery, Carrie. So much love. Notable shouts also to Anne Rice and Poppy Z Brite, also Dean R Koontz and Richard Laymon.

My other main love is chick-lit. As much as I love escapism, I also like stories about people like me where everything works out fine, real people with real lives that we can recognise with a fantastic cast of characters and a happily-ever-after. Cecilia Ahern, Jaimie Admans, Christie Barlow, Marian Keyes, Belinda Jones, Ali McNamara, Mandy Baggot are among my favourites.

I also really love urban fantasy – and this actually ties in a little bit with this week’s Book Blogger Hop which is asking What genre do you refuse to read and why and oh, unpopular opinion time so I’ll probably going into witsec after saying this but I Do Not Like Fantasy. Specifically, high fantasy. It just… I have no patience for world-building, they all feel exactly the same and they bore me. I’ve tried so many (Tolkien, Eddings, Pratchett, Le Guin, Brooks, Goodkind) and I just can’t get into them.

But urban fantasy? I love it. It’s our world but just that little bit different. I love magic and magical realism, I love vampires, I love were-creatures, I love – to quote a beloved tv show – ‘vampires, demons, and the forces of darkness’. I grew up on Buffy and Charmed, fell headlong into Harry Potter in my 20s. Give me Ben Aaronovitch, Kelley Armstrong, Patricia Briggs, Jim Butcher, Rachel Caine, Cassandra Clare, Rick Riordan, Rachel Vincent…

I’m trying to expand my horizons a little and am giving some of the currently popular YA fantasy a go. I’m really enjoying Sarah J Maas’ A Court of Thorns and Roses and Holly Black’s The Cruel Prince. So possible I need to add ‘fae’ as a niche. I tried Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone but only got about 15 pages in before noping out, too fantasy for me.
Am open to more recommendations of this type of book

I struggle with comics/graphic novels/manga. Although as a child, I read a LOT of comics (Beano, The Real Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and I had a definite manga phase in my early 20s (mostly yaoi). I’ve tried the Stargate, Sandman, Buffy etc graphic novels as well as trying to dip into Marvel but the style doesn’t work for me and I struggle to follow the story. The layout doesn’t make sense to my brain.

I don’t get on very well with a lot of humor – like I don’t get on with the style of Pratchett or Adams.
While I love chick-lit, I don’t like Mills & Boon/Harlequin style romances.
I can’t see me ever reading westerns.

So yes – loving horror, chick-lit and urban fantasy with science-fiction coming a close second. Also we need to give mystery, thriller and medical dramas a honourable mention. Ooh, and historical fiction, alternate history and steampunk
But not really into fantasy, harlequins or graphic novels.

Do you now see why my answer to “What type of book do you like” is ones with words in them? LOL

Book Blogger Hop: Book Signings

This week’s Book Blogger Hop question is Have you ever attended a book signing? If so, who was the author?

And no, no I have not. Despite the number of science-fiction conventions events I go to, and actors I meet, get autographs from and photos with, I’ve never been to a book signing event. I have a couple of books where a friend has been and got a book signed for me and that’s pretty awesome. Always a good memory when I open up the book, especially as that friend passed away a couple of years ago.

I would like to go to a signing event. Right now, between COVID and agoraphobia, that’s not going to be happening any time soon and I’m not a huge fan of doing things on my own – although now, I’m pretty sure my betrothed would come along with me.

So, hopefully, one day, the answer will be yes
